Superman Ascended I mean Returns

Dec 8, 2006

I just finished watching Superman Returns with my family.  My four year old daughter thought it was the best movie she ever saw.

She has quite a list of those from Garfield(cried during Garfield), to every Harry Potter movie, to Robots, and The Incredible's and don't get me started on Nemo.

It was a very good movie, even though there were a few obvious things that were apparent in the plot from the first five minutes of the movie, but I won't spoil them here.

The religious symbology was excessive, but not in a detracting kind of way.  It almost became a kind of game watching the movie to spot all of the religious iconography.  Superman was created with many parallels to JC and that definitely was emphasized in the cinematography of Superman Returns.

It doesn't matter to me one way or another, but watching a movie full of symbology does take on a game like feeling, kind of like trying to find Waldo.  Where's Waldo?

Oh, there's Jesus Superman ascending, there he is getting stabbed in the side not with a spear but with a kryptonite dagger, there he is ascending again in a crucifixion pose, let me just yada yada yada through all the crucifixion poses in this movie.

Anyway the movie was very good.  The acting was very good all the way around.  I think I prefer the more human version in the TV show Smallville, but as movies go this was not bad.  Not quite up to par with Batman Begins in the superhero genre, but at least it wasn't in 3D!

When I was 4 years old, I probably had a new Best Movie Ever at least once a month or so .. Superman Returns, however, was indeed a very good movie .. can't wait for the next one!
