I think one thing that is often overlooked is the mental cost of doing violence to other humans. I think of Bertrand Russell's quote, "Don%u2019t you understand? The sacrifice we%u2019re asking of our young is not that they die for their country, but that they kill for their country." In some respects, I think that can be a contributing factor--to survive in a war, one constantly has to rationalise on some level the violence that surrounds them and occasionally, they end up rationalising all violence as a means to an end.
